- Your experience in DL'ing .zip files is normal. .zip files are
- already compressed, and won't benefit much (if at all) from modem
- compression algorithms.
-
- As for your question regarding constantly changing line conditions,
- you have to remember that *any* renegotiation, fall-back,
- fall-forward, etc. takes some time. For this reason it is not
- desirable for a modem to be making such adjustments many times per
- second; or even a few times in a minute for that matter. Modems are
- made to try to operate within a set of criteria, and when the
- tollerance levels are exceeded *then* some adjustment will be made. A
- minor fluctuation in line conditions usually will not (and should not)
- create a renegotiation.
-
- Finally,... yes, you may monitor transmit and receive speeds of a
- connection. In Trumpet Winsock for example use the "manual login"
- command *after* you've already logged in. Then type your modem's
- command sequence (usually "+++" followed by a one second pause). You
- will find yourself in the modem's command mode. Now typing "AT%q1"
- gives detailed line condition information. "AT%L" gives you signal
- level information. "AT\s" gives you a list of all kinds of stuff
- including your current connect rates.
-
- "ATo" will put you back online, and "ATo1" will trigger a
- renegotiation and put you back online.
-
- Once you've gone back online hit "escape" while in Trumpet Winsock to
- resume your data communications.
-
- Other software will behave differently of course, and these commands
- are for the SupraFaxModem28.8i.
